AISI, Berry Metal develop Energy-efficient ironmaking

April 2013 - Berry Metal Co., Harmony, Pa., collaborated with the American Iron and Steel Institute and the University of Utah to develop a flash ironmaking process that will be an energy-efficient and environmentally preferred alternative to traditional blast furnaces. The process uses direct gaseous reduction of fine iron concentrates to make iron and is powered by natural gas. Early test results have shown CO2 reductions of up to 50 percent may be achieved, depending on the reductant. Berry Metal Co. will design and manufacture the equipment used in the process.
