April 4, 2017 - The Aluminum Association announced the addition of four new member companies – Almexa Alumino, Emirates Global Aluminium, Linde LLC and Material Sciences Corporation. Almexa Alumino and Emirates Global Aluminium join the Association as producer members – firms that make or fabricate aluminum products. Linde LLC and Material Sciences Corporation join as associate members – organizations that supply goods and services to the industry.
“This is a unique time for our industry with both opportunities and challenges for companies along the value chain of aluminum production,” said Garney Scott, President & CEO of Scepter and Aluminum Association Chairman. “We’re excited to have these new voices at the table as we continue to speak with a united voice for the industry.”
New companies include:
- Almexa Alumino: Almexa Alumino, with more than 70 years of experience, is the leading manufacturer of aluminum rolled products in Latin America. Based out of Cuautitlan, Mexico, the firm operates three plants and produces aluminum plate, sheet and foil for a variety of markets including automotive, packaging, construction and cookware.
- Emirates Global Aluminium: Emirates Global Aluminum (EGA), based in the United Arab Emirates, is the largest primary aluminum producer in its region. EGA has two core primary aluminum operating assets, in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, in addition to an under-construction bauxite project in the Republic of Guinea and and an under-construction alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi. The firm produces projects in four main forms: ingot, billet, slab ingot and liquid metal.
- Linde LLC: Linde LLC, based out of Bridgewater, New Jersey, is a member of The Linde Group. The Linde Group is a leading supplier of industrial, process and specialty gases. For the aluminum industry, Linde also supplies oxygen-assisted combustion technologies for remelt and recycling furnaces to enhance productivity and process flexibility, reduce emissions, and upgrade combustion system reliability. Argon and nitrogen gases are also provided for degassing and stirring of liquid metal.
- Material Sciences Corporation: Material Sciences Corporation, headquartered in Canton, MI at their Application Research Center and aluminum processing plants in Walbridge, Ohio and Elk Grove Village, Illinois, provides cleaning and treating of aluminum coils for aluminum producers. In addition, the firm provides coil coating services and supply chain management to various industries. The firm developed Quiet Aluminum ®, which reduces noise, vibration and harshness in automotive vehicle applications, as well as supporting in weight loss trends.
The new member additions come at a time of continued domestic demand growth for aluminum. According to the latest industry data, the North American aluminum industry shipped nearly 26 billion pounds of aluminum in 2015, the most since 2007. Since 2013, member companies have announced domestic plant expansions and planned investment totaling more than $2.8 billion to meet anticipated demand growth for aluminum in the automotive sector as automakers strive to make better-performing and more fuel-efficient vehicles.
However, challenges remain, particularly with an oversupply of aluminum coming from China. The Aluminum Association recently filed its first-ever antidumping and countervailing duty case against subsidized Chinese aluminum foil flooding the market. In addition, the association joined the Aluminium Association of Canada and European Aluminium in calling for a global forum to address aluminum overcapacity issues. The Aluminum Association is committed to highlighting unfair and unsustainable trade practices to ensure the continued health of the entire domestic aluminum value chain.
