One-time steelworker Karl Malden dies

July 2009 - Karl Malden, Oscar-winning actor, former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and former Indiana steelworker, died July 1 at the age of 97. Malden lived in Gary, Ind., as a child and worked at a steel mill until 1934, when he moved to Chicago to study acting at the Goodman Theatre. He won his Best Supporting Actor Oscar 1952 for his role in "A Streetcar Named Desire."
