July 2009 - Robert McNamara, secretary of defense for John F. Kennedy and former CEO of Ford Motor Co., died July 6 at age 93. McNamara was Ford's first president from outside the Ford family and was widely considered a "corporate whiz." As defense secretary, McNamara became known as the architect of the Vietnam War, a description he struggled to shake later in life. After serving as defense secretary, he spent 13 years as president of the World Bank.
