October 2010 - Penn Stainless Products, Quakertown, Pa., a full-line supplier and processor of stainless sheet, plate, bar, structural, pipe and tubular products, recently installed a heavy-gauge cut-to-length line from Herr-Voss Stamco, Callery, Pa., a designer and manufacturer of coil processing equipment, including slitting lines, cut-to-length lines, tension leveling lines and precision roller levelers. Currently, Penn Stainless inventories coil in 304, 304L, 316L, 321, 309, 310, 409, 2205 and LDX 2101 in widths up to 72 inches. The company serves domestic and international customers with stainless, high-temperature, corrosion, Duplex and PH alloys.
The new line will allow Penn Stainless to provide its customers with flat plate and sheet products. The company chose Herr-Voss Stamco because of its technical expertise in corrective leveling of heavy-gauge stainless and worked closely with the company to ensure that the line met all expectations. Herr-Voss Stamco provided all turnkey installation and commissioning for the line, which is currently in full production.
"Working with Jim [Seward, president of Penn Stainless] and Bill [Clerihan, Penn Stainless plant manager], we identified Penn Stainless' expectations and requirements, which resulted in many key features for the line. The heavy-duty leveler with 4-inch-diameter work rolls provides the necessary muscle to process 3/8-inch by 78-inch stainless steel, along with the finesse required to level material as light as 13 gauge. Additionally, the rebook mode reduces scrap losses, and improved production when processing short runs," said John Marzula, director of engineering for Herr-Voss Stamco, in a press release. The line can process stainless steel coils up to 50,000 pounds by 78 inches wide, with a thickness range of 0.090 inches to 0.375 inches. The cut-to-length line includes an overhung mandrel-type uncoiler, three-roll breaker, entry-crop shear, Precision Leveler, vinyl applicator, down-cut shear, drop-type stacker, line marking, pack lift and run-out conveyors.
"The new Herr-Voss Stamco line significantly expands our leveling capabilities on surface-critical 2B sheet finish, as well as corrective leveling of 0.375 gauge," said Jim Seward, president of Penn Stainless, in a press release. "Our expansive coil inventory combined with the new line means we can reduce delivery times, even for special lengths, while giving our customers improved flatness and quality." MM
