January 31, 2017 - A new study released by the Original Equipment Suppliers Association (OESA), and parent company Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), shows that original equipment (OE) automotive supplier jobs in the U.S. have risen nearly 23.4 percent since 2012. More than 523,000 Americans are directly employed by the OE automotive supplier industry, up from 424,000 in 2012.
January 31, 2017 - Charter Steel today announced plans to build a new Special Bar Quality (SBQ) bar mill adjacent to its existing coil mill and steelmaking operations in Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio. The highly automated rolling mill will utilize precision sizing to produce diameters from .750 to 3.250 inches (19 to 83mm) in bar lengths from 12 to 50 feet (3.7 to 15.3m).
January 26, 2017 - On January 10, OMAX Corp. was one of 37 companies to receive the prestigious Tibbetts Award at the White House. The Tibbetts Award is given to small businesses and individuals by the US Small Business Administration in recognition for innovative research and development of transferrable technology. OMAX received the award for its outstanding technological innovation in the area of micro abrasive waterjet technology, culminating in the MicroMAX JetMachining Center.
January 25, 2017 - The quarto plate stainless steel mill in New Castle, Indiana—previously owned by Finland-based, Outokumpu—returns to American ownership. The mill and its assets were purchased from Outokumpu by the millʼs current management team and a private equity company, DʼOrazio Capital Partners, LLC. The new company will operate under the name New Castle Stainless Plate, LLC and will be based in New Castle, Indiana. The sale was effective at midnight on January 24, 2017.
January 25, 2017 - World crude steel production reached 1,628.5 million tonnes (Mt) for the year 2016, up by 0.8% compared to 2015. Crude steel production decreased in Europe, the Americas and Africa. Crude steel production increased in the CIS, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania.
January 24, 2017 - In a move that could possibly boost demand for metal-intensive parts, Ford Motor Co. launched Omnicraft, giving dealers access to a complete family of parts to sell and service all makes of vehicles.
January 24, 2017 - Kobe Steel, Ltd. announces that it has begun supplying titanium alloy forged material for shafts to IHI Corporation. The forged material certified by IHI is used in a large commercial jet engine manufactured by General Electric (GE). IHI is one of the joint development partners of the engine.
January 19, 2017 - Dallas Industries, a manufacturer of coil handling, press feeding equipment and controls for the stamping industry, has announced that the Adient (formerly Johnson Controls) facility in Athens, Tenn., has taken delivery on two complete feed lines, along with two reels and retrofit coil guide rolls for existing systems.
January 13, 2017 - Commercial Metals Co. announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Owen Steel Co., South Carolina, has signed a definitive asset purchase agreement to acquire certain assets from OmniSource Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Steel Dynamics Inc., consisting of seven recycling facilities located in the southeast United States which are in close proximity to CMC's minimill in Cayce, South Carolina.
January 13, 2017 - Commercial Metals Co. today announced that the company will soon become the first and only producer of hot-rolled, spooled rebar in the United States. CMC plans to begin production at its new micro mill in Durant, Oklahoma in the fall of 2017 and expects to begin shipping spooled rebar in the spring of 2018.
January 13, 2017 - As the company continues to align itself to best serve its markets and customers, Southwire announced that it will close the operations at its Flora, Illinois, manufacturing facility. In addition, the company announced it will move its operations at the Southwire Dallas Customer Service Center in Arlington, Texas, to the company's newly acquired facility in Denton, Texas.
