Bonnell Aluminum buys Western extruder

February 2, 2017 - Bonnell Aluminum, Newnan, Georgia, has agreed to acquire Futura Industries, Clearfield, Utah. Futura designs and manufactures extruded aluminum products for multiple end markets, including flooring trims, OEM components for truck grills, solar panels, fitness equipment and other applications. The company employs about 350 people.

New report: U.S. OE automotive parts manufacturing jobs up 23 percent

January 31, 2017 - A new study released by the Original Equipment Suppliers Association (OESA), and parent company Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), shows that original equipment (OE) automotive supplier jobs in the U.S. have risen nearly 23.4 percent since 2012. More than 523,000 Americans are directly employed by the OE automotive supplier industry, up from 424,000 in 2012.

Charter Steel to add SBQ bar mill near Cleveland

January 31, 2017 - Charter Steel today announced plans to build a new Special Bar Quality (SBQ) bar mill adjacent to its existing coil mill and steelmaking operations in Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio. The highly automated rolling mill will utilize precision sizing to produce diameters from .750 to 3.250 inches (19 to 83mm) in bar lengths from 12 to 50 feet (3.7 to 15.3m).

New Castle Stainless Plate LLC formed after Outokumpu divestiture

January 25, 2017 - The quarto plate stainless steel mill in New Castle, Indiana—previously owned by Finland-based, Outokumpu—returns to American ownership. The mill and its assets were purchased from Outokumpu by the millʼs current management team and a private equity company, DʼOrazio Capital Partners, LLC. The new company will operate under the name New Castle Stainless Plate, LLC and will be based in New Castle, Indiana. The sale was effective at midnight on January 24, 2017.

World crude steel output increases by 0.8% in 2016

January 25, 2017 - World crude steel production reached 1,628.5 million tonnes (Mt) for the year 2016, up by 0.8% compared to 2015. Crude steel production decreased in Europe, the Americas and Africa. Crude steel production increased in the CIS, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania.

Kobe Steel begins mass production of titanium alloy forged material for large jet engine made by GE

January 24, 2017 - Kobe Steel, Ltd. announces that it has begun supplying titanium alloy forged material for shafts to IHI Corporation. The forged material certified by IHI is used in a large commercial jet engine manufactured by General Electric (GE). IHI is one of the joint development partners of the engine.

Commercial Metals Co. announces it will be the first to introduce spooled rebar in the U.S.

January 13, 2017 - Commercial Metals Co. today announced that the company will soon become the first and only producer of hot-rolled, spooled rebar in the United States. CMC plans to begin production at its new micro mill in Durant, Oklahoma in the fall of 2017 and expects to begin shipping spooled rebar in the spring of 2018.
