Serve and protect

A rugged, high-strength holster is made tough for police and military personnel

April 2015 - Law enforcement and military personnel are frequently in the line of fire, safeguarding our freedom or preventing and investigating crimes. While chasing down an assailant, the last thing on an officer’s mind is the location of his or her cell phone. But while on duty, officers rely on cell phones—in addition to their radios—regularly receiving orders from supervisors. Ballistic Case Co. partnered with Tacprogear (TPG) to create a line of durable, battle-tested protective phone cases and holsters made to withstand everything from an accidental drop to a scuffle with a suspect.

Ballistic Case Co., Sunrise, Florida, partnered with TPG, Boynton Beach, Florida, to create the Hard Core Tactical line that meets the demanding environments that law enforcement and military personnel face. “Policemen have to have their cell phone attached to them at all times. They don’t want to have it in their pockets so they stick it on their vest. There has never been a phone case that can figure out how to do that [effectively],” TPG President Loren Simpson says.

The Hard Core Tactical line protects phones from dust, dirt, debris and water. The cases can withstand a 12-foot drop and are equipped with integrated springs to absorb shock on impact. Ballistic’s protective holster was made to fit TPG’s modular lightweight load-carrying equipment (MOLLE) vests used in the field.

With the help of TPG, Ballistic designed a rugged holster with 200-pound pull strength assembled with aircraft-grade aluminum and stainless steel components made to fit TPG’s vest. “The bottom-line reason for metal (versus plastic) is really strength to weight ratio,” says Fernando Tages, vice president of research and development at Ballistic Case.

“Our test team tries its hardest to break our products. It went through quite a lot of tests. It has been tested to 230 pounds and that’s about two to three times stronger than anything else on the market,” adds Tages.

TPG also put the holster to the test. “We took the first 100 Hard Core Ballistic case samples and sent 10 of them to the most hardcore guys we could find. We sent them to elite Army Special Forces, the elite Navy SEALs, and FBI SWAT teams,” says Simpson. “In phase two, we also sent them to firefighters and a couple of guys on the LAPD.”

Simpson received positive feedback from everyone in the field, including an LAPD officer who took down an assailant with his phone in the holster. “He had to chase him down and tackle him. When he was done handcuffing him, he had [his phone] right there.”

Military personnel who routinely crawl, clamber over walls or run while carrying out missions also reported the holster kept their phones safe from damage. “They just want to make sure they are safe, and when they actually need their phone, it has to be there. That’s really what it’s all about it.

“We want them to have the best of the best,” adds Simpson. “Working in an environment like that we want the ultimate in protection.” MM
