Premium PVDF coating helps unite Kent Police Station with surrounding architecture
August 15, 2018 - The Kent Police Station, Kent, Ohio, is located at a transition point between two different neighborhoods and architecturally distinct areas. Visually, it had to echo the more modern Kent State College Architecture and Design building while nodding to the nearby, more classic structures of the central business district. Additionally, the station had to appear welcoming, positioning it as a safe pillar of the community.
The team at DS Architecture utilized a total of 6,570 square feet of CENTRIA’s Formawall® Dimension Series® Graphix metal panels and EcoScreen® perforated screenwall in the Allura™ Terra Cotta finish to effectively establish the Kent Police station as the desired transition between the historic downtown district and the more contemporary developments on campus. CENTRIA’s range of premium Allura PVDF coatings deliver a low-gloss finish with matte colors. Combined with subtle aggregate textures, the coatings mimic the desirable aesthetics of terra cotta and stone or masonry facades. This coating type allowed the team to achieve their design goals, uniting the station with surrounding architecture.
“CENTRIA was an integral part of the design solution from start to finish,” says Eric Pros, Director of Design, DS Architecture, the firm responsible for the design. “We selected the Allura Terra Cotta finish to echo the masonry context around this site, aiding in unifying the community.”
All of CENTRIA’s coating systems, including the Allura series, offer rich colors and finishes with innovative durability. For a modern imagination of a building located in such a transition neighborhood, this coating allowed the architects to design a façade with the characteristics to visually unite the community space.
Kent Police Station was completed in April 2018.
