May 2019 - Profiles is a six-story commercial building cloaked in a façade that consists of a CR Glass–produced curtainwall shaded by a veil of perforated carbon steel. Using a repeated pattern of openings that gradually expand, vertical striations emerge, mimicking the tufts of a pleated curtain.
Some of the perforated material is attached to the panels; these chads change in size to add further depth to the façade by softening the appearance of the steel and, at times, dematerializing the panels themselves. Overall, the perforation was optimized for ventilation and light yet maintains privacy and visibility for occupants.
Although the façade was digitally designed and partially CNC-fabricated, significant segments required hand bending. For example, the chads were welded by hand.
