November 2020 - Where a raindrop begins its long journey into the sea, visitors to the new observation deck on the Schnals Valley Glacier can be refreshed by the wide-open views. The viewing platform, designed by NOA* (Network of Architecture), was developed based on a light structure made of Cor-Ten steel, giving a modern touch that also blends in with the landscape. The design incorporates the pre-existing summit cross, and the platform touches the ground only where there is a static necessity. This creates a detached, almost floating construction that follows the natural topography. A plateau grid was placed atop slender crossbeams, which are enveloped in thin vertical layers of Cor-Ten steel. This creates a magical effect: an opening and closing of views that follows the movement of the viewer, which invites new perspectives.
