September 7, 2022- AISI President and CEO Kevin Dempsey today spoke at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) “Industrial Decarbonization Roundtable,” hosted by Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and White House Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy. The event centered around today’s release of DOE’s Industrial Decarbonization Roadmap, which is aimed at strategies to reduce industrial emissions in the United States.
Dempsey welcomed DOE’s engagement with industry and the release of the roadmap, and expressed support for continuing to work with the agency to build on the steel industry’s current initiatives and successes in reducing emissions.
“The American steel industry is a leader in decarbonization,” Dempsey said. “The innovations and investments that the industry has made, and continues to make, to produce steel with low carbon emissions intensity have made us the cleanest among the major steel-producing nations in the world.
“Clean American-made steel is also a solutions-provider in combating the global climate crisis, as steel is the critical component in the continued development of all clean energy technologies. Wind and solar electricity systems, the electric vehicle transition, investments in upgrading the U.S. electric grid and other critical energy infrastructure systems all depend on steel. We look forward to continuing to work with Secretary Granholm and her team to enhance these initiatives to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint and promote a green economy,” he concluded.
